Summary

This report,published by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA),summarizes the proceedings of the Regional Consultative Meeting on Migration and Development in the Arab Region,jointly organized by ESCWA,the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the League of Arab States. This meeting was in preparation for the Second High-Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development at the League of Arab States Headquarters in Cairo from 4-5 June,213. The themes addressed at this meeting included: an overview of migration and development challenges in the Arab region,protecting the human rights of migrants and improving conditions for migrant workers,the potential roles for expatriate communities in development planning and practice,supportng mutual development goals through international and regional labour mobility,and partnerships and cooperation on international migration at the regional and global levels. The meeting was attended by 15 countries from the region,Jordan,United Arab Emirates,Bahrain,Syria,Sudan,Iraq,Palestine,Qatar,Kuwait,Lebanon,Egypt,Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Also,the Government of Sweden participated in the meeting as Chair of the Global Forum on Migration and Development.
