In the Shadow of the State: Changing Definitions of Arab Women's "Developmental" Citizenship Rights

Summary

This article provides a historical regional overview of the role of the Middle Eastern state in pushing for women's citizenship rights as part of a development discourse over the past sixty years. The author examines,in particular, how the role and mobilization of Arab women themselves have affected the state's campaigns for such rights. The primary historical moments that define the author's analysis are the decolonization of the 6s and 7s and the global transition to market economies in the 8s.
