The report presents an up-to-date analysis of gender disparities in Jordan to inform development assistance programs by the USAID for the 2013-2017 strategic plan. The assessment report is prepared by the Global Health Technical Assistance Project;; funded by USAID Jordan and therefore;; it is based on a literature review and field work of the 21 focus group discussions held in Amman;; Irbid;; Tafileh and Zarqa. The report establishes that Jordan has begun to transition to a knowledge-based economy with the national advantage as its people. It also points out that despite the investments that have helped address gender equality issues;; Jordan continues to bear low female participation in the labor markets;; gender stereotypes about the role of females and males and conservative cultural norms. The report includes a sector-by-sector analysis;; recommendations;; gender review and an illustrative implementation plan. It concludes with key recommendations on the wide breadth of the USAID Jordan portfolio with a key emphasis on gender issues.

Since Jordan signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994;; there has been growing tension between the Jordanian government and the independent press;; particularly the kingdom's small-circulation weekly newspapers. Journalists and editors have been arrested;; detained and prosecuted for violations of both the penal code and provisions of the press and publications law of 1993. By the count of one Jordanian weekly newspaper;; since the law went into effect sixty-two cases have been brought against journalists and editors;; the overwhelming majority of them with weekly newspapers. Faced with public opposition to normalization of relations with Israel;; frustration about the implementation of the Oslo Accords between Israel and the Palestinian Authority;; and popular discontent with the state of the economy and high rates of unemployment and underemployment;; Jordanian authorities have clearly signaled a growing discomfort with the exercise of freedom of expression by both individual critics and the press.

This 66-page report documents the arbitrary arrest and abusive treatment of detainees held at the General Intelligence Department's (GID) central detention facility in Amman. The report finds that there is no clear basis in Jordanian law for the GID's law enforcement role;; and that detainees cannot seek an independent judicial review of the grounds for arrest and continued detention.

يهدف هذا التقرير إلى تقديم قراءة تقييمية لواقع الصحة والسلامة المهنية في بيئة الأعمال الأردنية;; تتضمن قراءة في التشريعات الأردنية الخاصة بالصحة والسلامة المهنية;; إلى جانب استعراض لأبرز المعايير الدولية ذات العلاقة;; إضافة إلى تقديم قراءة لمدى موائمة التشريعات الأردنية مع المعايير الدولية في هذا المجال;; كما اعتمد التقرير في منهجيته على تحليل البيانات الاحصائية المتاحة حول الصحة والسلامة المهنية واصابات العمل;; وكما تم اجراء مقابلات مع بعض رؤساء النقابات العمالية;; وذلك إلى جانب مراجعة المعلومات والأخبار الصحية التي تناولت هذا الموضوع. ويقدم التقرير مجموعة من التوصيات التي من شأنها تحسين شروط الصحة والسلامة المهنية للعاملين في الأردن.

In this third installment in the series;; the report focuses on the deficit of freedom and good governance and calls for far-reaching legal and political reforms.

يأتي هذا التقرير في اطار سلسلة التقارير الدورية التي يصدرها المرصد العمالي الاردني التابع لمركز الفينيق للدراسات الاقتصادية والمعلوماتية. حيث يستعرض هذا التقرير الظروف التي يعمل فيها العاملون في مؤسسة الموانئ من حيث الأجور والعلاوات;; والاسقرار الوظيفي;; ومدى توفر معايير الصحة والسلامة المهنية;; وغيرها من الحقوق العمالية الأساسية. واعتمد التقرير في اعداده على المنهج النوعي;; وذلك عبر اجراء المقابلات الشخصية مع العشرات من العاملين في المؤسسة;; إلى جانب مقابلة غالبية أعضاء اللجنة النقابية فيها;; بالإضافة إلى الزيارات الميدانية. وكما خلص التقرير بمجموعة من التوصيات التي تهدف إلى التخفيف من الانتهاكات التي يتعرض لها العاملون في هذه المؤسسة.
