Are Women Really the "Fairer" Sex? Corruption and Women in Government
This report finds that the greater the representation of women in parliament, the lower the level of corruption and the more honest the government. These findings are consistent with the findings of numerous behavioral studies that have found women to be more tust-worthy and public-spirited than men, suggesting that women should be particularly effective in promoting honest government. This paper attempts to evaluate these findings by examining the relationship between female participation in government legislatures and the level of perceived corruption in a sample of more than 1 countries. This report found a strong, negative, and statistically significant relationship between the proportion of women in a country's legislature and the level of corruption,as measured by the ICRG corruption index. It has found this association in a large crosssection of countries, and the result is robust to a wide range of specifications.
