Gender and Citizenship in Jordan
This report discusses the importance of gender and citizenship in Jordan within the context of the centrality of family to Jordanian culture and society. National cohesion, rights and obligations of family members, interrelatedness between the patriarchial family and the patriarchial state, and allegiance to the symbols of family and tribe solidarity emanate from the concept of one unified family and help to support the unified Jordanian state. This report looks at the conflict Jordan is facing between the forces of rapid socioeconomic and political change and the desire to preserve traditions and maintain the status quo of the social order. The aim of the report is to analyze the concept of citizenship within the context of the Jordanian state,as well as to look at the way Jordan has articulated the relationship between its citizens and the state. It does this by examining male-female relations and how these relationships exclude gender from citizenship.
