Transitions and boundaries: Research into the impact of paid work on young women's lives in Jordan

Summary

Based on more than 3 surveys and 4 interviews with young,single women living in Amman,Jordan,the author explores the social and cultural impact of the entrance of young,single women into the workforce. This article addresses the phenomenon of young women in the workforce by describing family reactions to their daughters' employment and young women's perception of their own and their peers' employment. The author concludes that the employment of young women is having some liberating effects on them,while at the same time traditional concepts of gender roles and family values are being reinforced through new forms of control over young women's livelihoods.
