Jordan demonstrations began with the economy and progressed to liberty.
Summary
Protests erupted in Jordan in June against an income tax bill and a fuel price increase, prompting the government's departure and the repeal of contentious legislation. Protesters' demands evolved to include an end to administrative governors' interference in the judiciary, particularly after activists were arrested despite judicial release orders. Lawyer Nour Al-Imam called the detentions a violation of the concept of separation of powers. Many young people attended the protests, as did lawyers who kept an eye out for any legal infractions. All eyes are on Omar Al-Razzaz's new government to deliver meaningful reforms and uphold the rule of law.
