SIGI: Marriage of relatives affects one in every four married women in Jordan with a percentage of 28%
This article talks about the statement issued by SIGI about the marriage of relatives and the attitudes of Jordanians towards this marriage. The percentage of married women or those who had previously married relatives dropped significantly from 56% in 1990 to 28% in 2017- 2018. The percentage has declined gradually over the past 28 years, reaching 46% in 1997, 39% in 2007 and 35% in 2012, according to the Population and Family Health Survey 2017-2018 issued by the Department of Statistics.
It also discusses the consequences of relatives' marriage of genetic diseases affecting children and cause disabilities. According to the statement, marriage of relatives is more prevalent in rural areas (32.1%), among girls aged 15-19 years (33%) whose educational attainment did not exceed the preparatory level (35.3%), indicating that theearly marriage is still associated with a great culture of marriage from relatives.
