Defining Taharosh: An Analysis of Jordanian and Syrian Women’s Experiences of Sexual Harassment in Jordan

Summary
This study explores Jordanian and Syrian women’s understandings and experiences of sexual harassment in public spaces in Jordanian cities. The report begins with a discussion of the various ways women in Jordan define taharosh al-jinsi,directly translated as sexual harassment. These definitions are then juxtaposed against women’s stories of their
experiences of harassment in order to paint a portrait of the way harassment is both thought about and lived through in Jordan.
62 interviews were conducted with Syrian and Jordanian women over 18 at community-based organization,universities,and cafes in Amman,Zarqa,Irbid,Karak,and Tafileh.
