USAID in Jordan
This article discusses the economic assistance that the United States has provided Jordan since 1952,as well as the developmental outcomes of the assistance. There have been hundreds of joint projects between Jordan and the US in order to build Jordan's infrastructure, develop its industrial and agriculture sectors, expand its educational system, and improve its governmental services. These projects have been very successful in helping Jordan achieve a high level of growth. This study aims to explore four themes relating to USAID assistance to Jordan: 1) the basis of aid primarily on political rather than economic considerations; 2) Jordan's acceptance of “tied aid” which allows the US to dictate terms; 3) Jordan's economic development policies that mirror USAID objectives; 4) the USAID dominance of other foreign donors in coordinating and planning developmental strategies.
