Women in Democratic Transitions in the MENA Region
This compilation of papers,written by the regional experts of the 212 Rabat Conference on Advancing Women's Political Participation in Transitions,examines the status of women in decision-making processes in the post-Arab Spring Middle East. These papers serve to highlight the struggles and successes of women in public service in the MENA region,as well as outline a path forward for women in the Middle East. The specific issues addressed by this report include: women’s leadership in Morocco; discrimination in the laws on equal participation in Lebanon’s public sphere; Libyan women’s leadership in the realms of political participation,public service,and transitional justice; an argument for why the Arab Spring countries need a plan of action for women; women’s status after Morocco’s Democratic Spring; the unrecognized female leaders of Egypt’s Arab Spring; recommendations for women in transitional justice in Tunisia; the relation between religious fundamentalism and Egypt’s women’s movement; and Yemen’s National Strategy for Women’s Development from 26 to 215.
