The Women's Movement in Jordan: Activism,Discourses and Strategies
This study examines the developments within the contemporary women's movement in Jordan, placing these developments within the mainstream of sociopolitical modernization processes taking place in Jordan. It describes the movement as an active driving force of sociopolitical change, and it looks at sociopolitical outcomes of the movement, including emancipating women and sensitizing society and state policies to gender issues and equal rights of women. The study seeks to answer questions such as: What is new in the Jordanian women's movement? What strategies and politics are applied to pursue the objectives? To what extent is the women's movement successful in politicizing women's issues, and in what areas? What resources of the movement are used, and to what extent do these assist or hinder the movement's success or failure? The study conducted face-to-face interviews with activist women, distributed a questionnaire that collected data related to the socioeconomic backgrounds of members and leaders of women's organizations, analyzed documents from the organizations, and conducted field visits to the organizations. The study investigates the sociopolitical obstacles that limit the work of the women's movement and the politicization of women-specific issues, and it evaluates the role of the state, gender ideology, and structural problems related to the movement.
